Playing without point guard John Wall, who sat out as part of the NCAA's conditional clearance ruling on his eligibility, strung together a somewhat ragged performance in mauling the Tigers 74-38 at Rupp Arena.
The Wildcats connected on 50 percent of its shots from the floor (28-56), but were plagued by stretches of bad shots and turnovers, committing 23 miscues on the night.
"That's what I told you you'd see early," Calipari said afterwards. "We're just 12 days in and we're not ready. Offensivley we were disappointed. We have a long way to go."
The Cats did use the decided height advantage of the 6-foot-11 DeMarcus Cousins, 6-10 Daniel Orton and 6-9 Patrick Patterson to dominate the smaller Tigers inside, holding a 48-12 advantage in points in the paint.
"Ridiculous," Campbellsville Coach Keith Adkins said of Kentucky's size. "I thought we really competed. We won't face that kind of talent, size or athleticism ever again this season. I was proud of our effort."
Leading 9-6, the Cats used an early 15-0 run to shoot out to a 24-6 lead and never looked back. Junior college transfer Darnell Dodson hit 7 of 14 shots including a pair of three pointers to lead the Cats with 19 points. DeMarcus Cousins added 11 and Perry Stevenson came off the bench in the second half to contribute 11 points in just six minutes of action.
The UK defense did seem a little further along than the offense, as the Tigers connected on just three of their first 31 shots in connecting on just 21 percent (12 of 57) of their shots on the night.
In the meantime, Calipari said this UK team will have to lean on it's defense until the offense comes around.
"We got a ways to go and I knew this," Calipari said. "This is a change of culture. We have to be a great defensive team, which we showed signs of. We gotta be a monster team blocking shots. The offense will come." Comments (1)

Hey Chris You got anything on why Liggins never left the bench? I'm guessing lack of effort in practice. . . |
